How to build a running habit that actually sticks
The reason most running plans fail is that they start too fast. Here's the tiny-habit approach to becoming a runner — for real.
Most people fail at running because they start with a 5K plan, not a habit. The trick is to build the identity first — 'I'm someone who runs' — and let the mileage follow.
Week 1–2: the tiny version
Put on your running shoes and step outside. That's the whole habit. Some days you'll run. Some days you'll walk. Both count.
Week 3–6: build the base
- 3 short runs a week, all at conversational pace.
- Take one full rest day between runs.
- Add 10% distance a week, no more.
- Have a rain-day tiny version: 5-minute jog.
Anchor it
Attach the run to a fixed cue — 'after morning coffee' or 'before dinner'. Runs that live in 'somewhere later today' rarely happen.
