How environment and context shape your habits
Most habits are triggered by your surroundings, not your intentions. Here's how to redesign your environment to make good habits easy.
Your environment is the single biggest predictor of your habits. If good habits are visible and easy, you'll do them. If bad habits are frictionless, you'll do those instead. Design beats discipline.
Make good habits obvious and easy
- Water bottle on your desk — you'll drink more.
- Book on your pillow — you'll read at night.
- Running shoes by the door — you'll actually go.
- Phone charger in the kitchen — you'll sleep better.
Make bad habits invisible and hard
- Delete or log out of apps that pull you in.
- Keep snacks out of eyesight.
- Put the TV remote in a drawer.
- Move notifications off your lock screen.
Context beats character
You're not 'a person who can't stop scrolling'. You're a person whose phone is next to their bed. Move the phone and the identity changes. That's the whole trick.
Turn ideas into a routine you actually keep.
Habit of the Day tracks consistency, not streaks — no guilt, no broken-streak spirals.
