How to make a habit tracker in Notion (and when not to)

A Notion habit tracker is flexible and free — but the setup can eat the habit. Here's a minimal version, plus when an app is a better fit.

A Notion habit tracker is a great fit if you already live in Notion and want your habits next to your notes. It's a bad fit if setting it up becomes the reason you never actually track.

A minimal Notion setup

  • One database, one row per day.
  • One checkbox column per habit (keep it to 3–5).
  • A rollup or formula for 'days completed in last 30'.
  • A daily template with today's row pre-created.

Where Notion falls short

No native push reminders, no offline-first mobile experience, and no built-in tiny-habit or grace-day logic. If you keep forgetting to open it, an app is a better fit — see how to use a habit tracker properly.
