How to build a habit tracker in Google Sheets

Sheets is the most customisable habit tracker you can build. Here's a lean setup that avoids the common trap of endless formatting.

A Google Sheets habit tracker is powerful, free, and works on any device. The trap is spending more time on formatting than habits. Keep it lean.

A minimal Sheets setup

  • Column A: date. One row per day.
  • Columns B–F: one habit each. 1 = done, 0 = missed, 0.5 = tiny.
  • A summary row with =AVERAGE for last 30 days — that's your consistency score.
  • Conditional formatting: green for 1, amber for 0.5.

When to switch to an app

If you keep forgetting to open the sheet, or you want push reminders and mobile-first check-ins, an app will keep you more consistent. See our comparison.

Turn ideas into a routine you actually keep.

Habit of the Day tracks consistency, not streaks — no guilt, no broken-streak spirals.
